Why we read each character this way

Eric Cartman MBTI type: ENTP

Cartman lives for schemes, arguments and big ideas, which is classic ENTP territory. He improvises his way out of trouble and rarely sticks to one plan for long. ENTJ is a fair second guess, given his bossy, take-charge side.

Big Five reading: openness 55, conscientiousness 45, extraversion 80, agreeableness 15, neuroticism 75.

Kyle Broflovski MBTI type: ENTJ

Kyle argues with logic, sets goals and pushes until the problem is fixed, which reads as ENTJ. He is more driven by principle than most ENTJ characters, so ENFJ is a fair second guess.

Big Five reading: openness 75, conscientiousness 75, extraversion 65, agreeableness 35, neuroticism 65.

Stan Marsh MBTI type: INFP

Stan runs on quiet values: he knows something is wrong long before he says it out loud. He is reflective, sensitive and easily disillusioned, which fits INFP.

Big Five reading: openness 60, conscientiousness 40, extraversion 25, agreeableness 85, neuroticism 60.

Kenny McCormick MBTI type: ISFP

Kenny is quiet, hands-on and lives in the moment, which points to ISFP. He shows he cares through actions rather than words, and he never turns down a new experience.

Big Five reading: openness 70, conscientiousness 25, extraversion 30, agreeableness 65, neuroticism 20.

Butters Stotch MBTI type: ESFJ

Butters wants everyone to get along, follows the rules and gets anxious when someone is upset with him. He's chatty and eager to join in whenever he's invited, so that people-first, by-the-book mix reads as ESFJ.

Big Five reading: openness 40, conscientiousness 70, extraversion 45, agreeableness 90, neuroticism 70.

Wendy Testaburger MBTI type: ENFJ

Wendy leads by rallying people around a cause, and she isn't afraid to confront anyone who stands in the way. Organized and persuasive, she reads as ENFJ with a strong ENTJ streak.

Big Five reading: openness 70, conscientiousness 80, extraversion 60, agreeableness 50, neuroticism 25.

Randy Marsh MBTI type: ENFP

Randy chases every new passion with total enthusiasm and very little planning. That restless, idea-driven energy, plus his big emotional swings, reads as ENFP.

Big Five reading: openness 80, conscientiousness 25, extraversion 75, agreeableness 50, neuroticism 65.

Tweek Tweak MBTI type: ISFJ

Tweek is loyal, careful and constantly scanning for danger. He craves safety and predictability, which is why we read him as ISFJ rather than a more spontaneous type.

Big Five reading: openness 40, conscientiousness 40, extraversion 25, agreeableness 60, neuroticism 90.

Craig Tucker MBTI type: ISTJ

Craig is deadpan, practical and allergic to hype. He likes his routine, says exactly what he thinks and keeps his business to himself, which reads as a natural ISTJ.

Big Five reading: openness 25, conscientiousness 55, extraversion 15, agreeableness 25, neuroticism 10.

Jimmy Valmer MBTI type: ESFP

Jimmy thrives on an audience, reads a room fast and lives for the moment the punchline lands. He scores above the middle on openness in our reading, but his comedy lives in the here and now, so we read him as S: a performer's ESFP.

Big Five reading: openness 65, conscientiousness 50, extraversion 80, agreeableness 65, neuroticism 30.

How we picked these types

We started from our Big Five reading of each character, the same 0–100 profiles the quiz uses. High extraversion points to E, high openness to N, high agreeableness to F and high conscientiousness to J. When a trait sits near the middle, or a character's behavior on the show clearly points the other way, we went with the behavior.

Three readings break that rule on purpose. Kenny and Jimmy score above the middle on openness, but both live in the moment, so we read them as S rather than N. Tweek gets a J because he craves safety and routine, even though he is far from organized. Butters sits just below the middle on extraversion, but he's chatty whenever he's invited, so he keeps his E.

Two patterns stand out. Four of the ten readings are introverts (Stan, Kenny, Tweek and Craig) and six are extraverts, which fits how loud most of South Park is. And Kyle and Cartman are both NT types, one ENTJ and one ENTP, which may be why their arguments never end: both want to win on logic, they just disagree about everything else.

MBTI is a self-report questionnaire made for real people. Cartoon characters can't fill it in, so every type on this page is an interpretation. Your own MBTI type doesn't decide your result in our South Park personality test either, because the quiz scores how you act in 14 everyday situations.

South Park MBTI FAQ

What MBTI type is Cartman?

In our fan reading, Cartman is an ENTP: he lives for schemes, arguments and big ideas and improvises his way out of trouble. ENTJ is a fair second guess, given his bossy, take-charge side. Neither is official.

What MBTI type is Kyle?

We read Kyle as an ENTJ: he argues with logic, sets goals and pushes until a problem is fixed. ENFJ is a reasonable second guess, because he is so driven by principle. It's a fan reading, not an official type.

Which South Park character is an INTP?

None of the 10 characters on this page is an INTP in our fan reading. The closest are Stan, an INFP who shares the quiet, questioning side, and Cartman, an ENTP who shares the love of ideas and arguments but is far more outgoing.

Are these the official South Park MBTI types?

No. To our knowledge, the show's creators have never published MBTI types for any character. Every type here is our fan reading, based on how the characters behave on the show, and other readings are fair game.
